4 Reasons Why I Started a Reading Journal with a picture of the cover page of my reading journal.

This year, my focus is all about being intentional. Intentional with time, intentional with creating, intentional with reading—and even intentional with spending. It’s about carving out space for the things that matter. I’ve always admired people who keep reading journals. In fact, Rachel has one that she uses to track her reading goals, and it inspired me to think, “Hey, maybe it’s time for me to take this step, too.” We all have that goal to read more…or maybe it’s just me? 😉

When I set up my bullet journal this year, I intentionally left it open-ended to accommodate whatever I felt like doing—whether that’s junk journaling or writing. With that flexibility, I realized I had the perfect opportunity to finally start my reading journal! My setup is small and simple for now, but it’s doing the job beautifully. Here’s why I started this journey and how it’s already making a difference:

KEEP THOUGHTS AND QUOTES IN ONE PLACE

Last September, I started jotting down books I’d read in my regular bullet journal. The problem? I’d have to flip through the entire thing to find where I’d scribbled notes. With a dedicated reading journal, it’s so much easier to locate what I’ve read and keep all my thoughts and standout quotes in one place. These quotes often spark deeper reflections about the story, acting as little breadcrumbs that lead me back to the emotions or lessons that resonated most.

REFLECT ON LESSONS AND EMOTIONS

I usually read for fun, so you won’t often find me with a business book. But even in lighthearted stories, there are emotions to explore and lessons to uncover. Reflecting on these moments—whether it’s through a standout quote or a particular scene—has been incredibly rewarding. My reading journal gives me the perfect space to process those thoughts and appreciate the impact each book has had on me.

TRACK MY READING GOALS

Like many people, I aim to read more each year, and my reading journal is the perfect visual motivator. I’ve set up a simple tracker with squares for each book I’ve finished. There’s something so satisfying about filling in those squares! I’m also considering adding a section for audiobooks since I don’t create full spreads for those but still want to recognize them. Tracking my progress keeps me motivated and intentional about my goal to read more.

CONTINUE TO CREATE

I’m always looking for ways to create more often, and my reading journal has become a fun escape. Designing spreads for the books I’ve read—adding doodles, stickers, or even collages—is such a joy. I’ve been using my existing stash of craft supplies, but I’m dreaming of growing my sticker collection or even painting small pieces inspired by each book. It’s a wonderful way to unwind and focus on something purely for me.

At its core, this journal is about intentionality. It’s not just a place to document the books I’ve read; it’s a space to pause, reflect, and find joy in the small things. We all need those moments to leave our worries behind and focus on the good. For me, my reading journal has become one of those moments.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a reading journal, consider this your sign! Even a simple collage of your current read can be a great way to start. I’d love to see your spreads, so please share them with us!

Let’s inspire each other to be more intentional with our reading, creating, and everything in between.
